Level 7 Construction Senior Management

Who is it designed for?

This qualification is for those who might be Contracts Manager, Project Managers, Senior Site Managers, Head of or at Director level managing Construction projects.

Which Awarding Body is this qualification from?

We use GQA Awarding Body to provide all of our NVQ's.

What mandatory units do I need to do?

There are 10 mandatory units, which are listed below, as well as an additional mandatory unit which will be selected in agreement with you by your NVQ Assessor.

1. Manage project processes in construction management

2. Manage teams in construction management

3. Recruit staff in own area of responsibility

4. Examine staff turnover issues in own area of responsibility

5. Plan, allocate and monitor work of a team

6. Plan, allocate and monitor work in own area of responsibility

7. Provide advice judgement and service ethically in construction management

8. Lead and manage meetings

9. Participate in meetings

10. Develop self and others in construction management

What optional units can I choose from?

There are also optional units for this NVQ. They will be chosen specific to the individual and what they do in their role. 


Options include (Please note, we do not need to achieve all of these. It is usually around 5 in total):

A. Control budgets and contract entitlement

B. Control projects in construction management

C. Prepare and agree a project brief and outline programme in construction

D. Direct the management of design development and processes

E. Manage the preparation and submission of estimates, bids and tenders

F. Implement, monitor and control strategic procurement systems

G. Assess and evaluate the sustainability and environmental impact of developments

H. Evaluate sustainable resources and requirements for the whole lifecycle of a construction project

I. Establish project procurement arrangements

J. Implement procurement processes

K. Ensure that contracts are prepared, negotiated and agreed

L. Evaluate and progress the resolution of contractual disputes

M. Manage marketing and customer service

N. Managing the handover of the construction project

Level 6 Construction Contracting operations Management (cco)

Who is it designed for?

This qualification is for those who have a hybrid role and may work on site occasionally. Such as QS, Buyers, Project Managers, Contract Managers and Design Managers etc.

1. Maintain health, safety and welfare systems in construction

2. Leading meetings and taking decisions

3. Developing and maintaining working relationships

4. Managing your personal development

5. Managing the performance of teams

What optional units can I choose from?

There are 4 optional units which must be chosen for this NVQ. They will be chosen specific to the individual and what they do in their role. 


Options include:

  • Identifying, assessing and evaluating project requirements
  • Coordinating project designs
  • Specifying production document requirements and ensuring the control and maintenance of project information
  • Developing a programme of works and a procurement programme
  • Implementing strategic and integrated supply chain management and sourcing partnerships
  • Obtaining tenders and appointing contractors
  • Evaluating enquiries and submitting tenders
  • Evaluating work methods and developing a programme of works
  • Developing a procurement plan and optimising supplier and service provider performance
  • Controlling contract work
  • Optimising contract progress and controlling costs
  • Preparing and agreeing interim valuations, entitlements and final accounts

Who is it designed for?

 This qualification is for for Senior Site Managers, Site Managers, Assistant Site Managers or Senior Site Supervisors.

Mandatory units include:

1. Developing  and Maintaining Good Occupational Working Relationships           

2. Allocating work and monitoring people's performance   

3. Contributing to the identification of a work team   

4. Establishing, implementing and maintaining organisational systems for managing health, safety, welfare and wellbeing.   

5. Establishing, controlling and monitoring environmental factors and sustainability   

6. Evaluating and confirming work methods   

7. Planning the preparation of the site for the project  

8. Monitoring Project Activities

9. Ensuring that work activities and resources meet the project work requirements

10. Identifying, allocating and planning the deployment and use of plant, equipment or machinery   11. Organising, controlling and monitoring supplies of materials

12. Identifying and maintaining communication systems and organisational procedures  

13. Controlling project progress against agreed quality standards

14. Establishing dimensional control criteria

15. Controlling project progress against agreed programmes

16. Controlling project quantities and costs

17. Evaluating feedback and making recommendations

18. Managing your personal development

19. Managing the installation, maintenance, monitoring and removal of temporary works

There is 1 optional unit which must be chosen for this NVQ. They will be chosen specific to the individual and what they do in their role. 


Options include:

  • Managing the project handover
  • Enabling learning opportunities
  • Planning and scheduling the maintenance activities of property, services or systems
  • Planning activities to traditional and heritage structures
  • Planning demolition activities
  • Planning Tunnelling activities

Level 4 Construction sITE SUPERVISION (cSS)

Who is it designed for?

 This qualification is for Site Supervisors, Assistant Site Managers or General Foreman who are overseeing site operations. It is also ideal for those who wish to complete this NVQ as a stepping stone before moving onto the Level 6 CSM NVQ in the future.

There are 14 mandatory units, which are listed below:

Mandatory units include:

1. Developing and Maintaining Good Occupational Working Relationships    

2. Implementing, maintaining and reviewing systems for managing health, safety, welfare and wellbeing and environmental protection 

3. Assessing and agreeing work methods

4. Planning work activities and resources to meet project requirements   

5. Co-ordinating preparation for site operations

6. Co-ordinating work control

7. Controlling work progress against agreed programmes

8. Allocating and monitoring the use of plant equipment or machinery

9. Implementing communication systems for the project

10. Controlling work against agreed quality standards

11. Contributing to the control of work quantities and costs

12. Maintaining supplies of materials to meet project requirements

13. Maintaining the dimensional accuracy of work

14. Supervising the installation, maintenance, monitoring and removal of temporary work 

What optional units can I choose from?

There is 1 optional unit which must be chosen for this NVQ. They will be chosen specific to the individual and what they do in their role. 


Options include:

  • Allocating work and monitoring people's performance in the workplace
  • Managing your personal development in
  • Enabling learning opportunities
  • Supervising activities to traditional and heritage buildings and structures
  • Contributing to the identification of a work team
  • Supervising the installation, commissioning and handover of retrofit works 
  • Supervising the pre-installation planning for retrofit works

Level 3 Construction Occupational Work Supervision (OWS)

Who is it designed for?

 This qualification is for working Supervisors, Gangers or General Foreman who are overseeing site operatives. It is also ideal for those who wish to complete this NVQ as a stepping stone before moving onto the Level 4 CSS NVQ in the future.

There are 2 optional units which must be chosen for this NVQ. They will be chosen specific to the individual and what they do in their role. 


Options include:

  • Allocating and monitoring the use of plant, machinery, equipment or vehicles
  • Monitoring progress of work against schedules
  • Implementing procedures to support the team performance
  • Co-ordinating and confirming the dimensional control requirements of the work
  • Confirming work meets contractual, industry and manufacturers’ standards
